Avocados are a powerful superfood and a great source of healthy fats, but they are also extremely perishable.

Once an avocado is ripe, it is best to eat it the same day or place it in the refrigerator immediately. Otherwise, the flesh can turn brown quickly. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it for weeks or even months.

If you are going to keep your avocados for a long time, it is best to freeze them immediately after they ripen. Freezing avocados will help preserve the fresh flavor, texture, and nutrients.

    Top reasons to freeze avocados

The main reason to freeze your avocados is to preserve the fresh flavor and nutrients while they are perfectly ripened. It's a great way to store them if you have too many ripe avocados.

If you're looking for the perfect way to store your avocados until their next use, then look no further than the freezer. You can use frozen avocado just like fresh avocado and they will keep well without becoming too mushy or browned.

Once you learn how to freeze avocados, you will find so many ways to use them! They are a key ingredient in lots of healthy recipes like my keto sushi.

    How to use frozen avocado

Frozen avocados are perfect for salads, wraps, and even smoothies. I have used frozen avocados for my breakfast avocado smoothie and my lunchtime low-carb salads. They are great for making keto desserts like chocolate avocado pudding too.

Eating avocados is a well-known way to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but many people find that they just don’t have time for this or that. If you find yourself with a lot of ripe avocados and no time to use them, try freezing the fruit!

Freezing avocados is a great way to store them so that they are always on hand for recipes like guacamole and avocado toast. But you'll need to make sure you know how to freeze avocados properly.

    Quick tips

    • Freeze on a tray or baking sheet. For the best results, freeze avocados on a try or baking sheet, rather than in bags. Once frozen, they can be transferred to a freezer-safe container or freezer bag.
    • Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. This will ensure the avocado pieces don't stick to the pan when frozen.
    • Have avocados at room temperature. If you have ripe avocados stored in the refrigerator, remove them an hour before you are going to freeze them.
    • Use ripe avocados. Make sure the avocados are as ripe as possible before freezing.
    • Add a little lemon juice. The juice from lemons contains citric acid which helps to prevent browning. But you also add in a fruity lemon flavor!
    • Purée avocado first. The cut avocado can be processed with the lemon juice and frozen in molds like ice cube trays.

    Instructions

The process is super easy to do! Simply remove the skin and cut up the flesh before freezing. Once frozen, just place the frozen avocado in a bag or airtight container and store them in the freezer for 3 months or more.

    Wash

When you buy avocados, they will be packaged in a plastic bag or container. Before you begin, wash the avocados.

Washing avocados removes the dirt and the slimy layer that covers the avocado.

    Remove seed

Cut the avocado in half lengthwise and twist the halves in opposite directions to separate them.

Remove the seed with a spoon or knife. If you have trouble getting it out with a spoon, insert a sharp knife into the seed to grip it and then give it a slight twist.

Once the seed is removed, take a large spoon and scoop out the fruit in one piece for each half.

    Cut

If you aren't going to freeze them in avocado halves, you'll want to cut each half into slices or cubes. The cubes and slices should be about ½ inch thick.

    Add lemon juice

Brush a little lemon or lime juice on the flesh of the avocados. If you don't have either, vinegar is a good alternative. The acid will prevent browning when they are exposed to air during the freezing and thawing process.

    Freeze

Once you have cut your avocados into the desired size pieces, it is time to put the avocado in the freezer. Just place them on a sheet pan and flash freeze in the freezer.

When the avocados are frozen, transfer them into a freezer bag or airtight container. They should keep for at least 3 months.

    ❄️ Thawing frozen avocados

It is best to thaw your frozen avocado chunks in the refrigerator. Use the avocados as soon as they are thawed.

If you want to thaw the avocado quickly, place the frozen avocado in a bowl of cold water for 10 minutes or until they are soft enough to slice.

    FAQs

Before getting to the printable recipe for how to freeze avocados, let's answer a few common questions about the process.

How do you store avocados in the freezer?

Ideally, you should cut the avocado in half and remove the pit. Place the halves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then place in the freezer for about an hour. Once frozen, transfer to a resealable bag or container. Avocados can be stored in the freezer for up to six months.

Can you freeze a whole ripe avocado?

Yes, you can freeze a whole ripe avocado. The best way to store a ripe avocado is in the freezer. Simply peel and cut the avocado in half and remove the seed and skin. Place each half on a separate sheet of aluminum foil, wrap tightly with the foil, and place in freezer for up to six months. Thaw slowly in refrigerator overnight before use.

Can you freeze avocados with the skin on?

No, the skin will not hold up to the freezing process. The best way to freeze avocados is to peel them, slice them, and store them in an airtight container or ziplock bag.

    Does frozen avocado taste good?

Some people say that frozen avocado has a similar taste and texture to ice cream. Others say that it tastes like a creamy frozen banana. Both sound delicious to me!
