I was never big on avocados. But after learning about their nutritional benefits and healthy fat, I have grown to love them. Lately, I've been eating one almost every day!

When I go grocery shopping, I usually pick up at least 4 or 5 organic avocados. Typically, I just slice them onto a green salad.

I wanted to try something a little different with them. I saw a few smoothie recipes that used an avocado as a thickener, but they were high in carbs as they also added a lot of fruit juice.

So, I came up with this keto avocado smoothie! It uses just a little lemon juice and lots of water. However, you can substitute with your milk of choice but I like to use dairy-free milk.

To offset the tartness of the lemon, I've also added some low carb sweetener as well. What you get is an amazing avocado shake with so much delicious fruit flavor!

    Ingredients

You can use any sweetener you'd like in this simple recipe. Liquid stevia or monkfruit is a great option if you want to stay away from erythritol and make this a low-carb paleo raspberry avocado smoothie. Sweetleaf even makes a berry-flavored stevia liquid that would really enhance the fruit flavor!

I used one whole ripe avocado in the smoothie which is perfect for two servings. I just sliced it in half, removed the pit, and removed the flesh with a spoon.

ingredients for the avocado smoothie recipe

The lemon juice brings out the flavors of the raspberries and helps all the ingredients mix together really well. You can also use lime juice but it has more natural sweetness and therefore a little more carbs.

To get the best texture, use frozen raspberries, not fresh. They make a thicker smoothie without the need for ice cubes and they can help hide the green color. The result is a refreshing drink that's absolutely delicious!

Please note: Check out the recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients used to make this low carb recipe.

    Quick tips

    • Make freezer smoothie packs. If you are a fan of "dump and blend" recipes, this delicious avocado smoothie is for you. You just dump all the ingredients into a high speed blender until you get the desired consistency. You can even meal prep smoothie freezer packs for a quick breakfast option.
    • You can turn this into any berry smoothie you'd like. Just change up the frozen fruit used! Although I added raspberries, frozen blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries are also great options. Just make sure the change in carbs meets your keto macros.
    • Get a good high-speed blender! The amount of ingredients is sized just right for a Small Blender which is a perfect blender to use for all my smoothies. A Vitamix Blender is on my wish list, but my cheaper blenders are working okay for now.
    • Up the nutrition. You can add in almond milk or coconut milk and a vanilla protein powder to make the drink more of a meal. Chia seeds are a great way to add in fiber too!

    Instructions

Your keto smoothie will have a delicious creamy texture thanks to the addition of the avocado. I'm not sure why it took me so long to make a simple smoothie out of this healthy low-carb high-fat fruit. And, yes, the avocado is a fruit!

There really isn't much more to say about how to make it. In fact, you don't even have to really measure the ingredients exactly. Just mix it all together, taste it, and adjust everything to your taste.

When you use frozen raspberries instead of fresh fruit, you don't need to add any ice cubes to it. The smoothie purées to the perfect silky texture every single time.

    ️ Serving Suggestions

This is makes a great afternoon snack that's high in good fats with low carbs and nutrient-dense snack. It's such a delicious smoothie that you'll feel like you're eating dessert.

It's the perfect breakfast smoothie too! Try adding in some protein powder, almond butter, natural peanut butter, or fresh spinach. This will make a more well-rounded meal.

You can also enjoy this super creamy avocado smoothie with a high-protein recipe like ham and cheese frittata muffins. If you want something really easy, fry up some almond flour pancakes to serve with it in the morning.

The combination will keep you full until lunch!

    FAQs

Before we get to the recipe card at the bottom of this post, I want to answer some questions people have about keto smoothies.

    Are smoothies keto-friendly?

Yes, smoothies are an excellent food for keto dieters! You just need to be careful with what you add to your smoothie. Every single fruit and vegetable has a different amount of carbs in it.

What can you use instead of avocado in a keto smoothie?

If you don't want to use avocado, you can still enjoy a super delicious low-carb avocado smoothie. Use your favorite nut butter instead! It still has lots of healthy fats and a creamy texture. Many use frozen banana but with 24 net carbs each, that is not a good idea for keto.

Is frozen avocado good in smoothies?

Yes, frozen avocado tastes delicious in a smoothie. Store your chopped avocado in a freezer bag. Some people also store pureed or smashed avocado in a silicone ice cub tray and use a few frozen avocado cubes in their smoothies.

    Why you'll love it

In the past, I've made an avocado chocolate pudding, but it didn't go over that well with the kids. However, I couldn't taste the avocado in this keto raspberry smoothie. In fact, my three year old refuses to eat avocados plain, but sipped up this fruity berry avocado smoothie without issue.

After the success of this smoothie, I'm going to look for some more ways to sneak the healthy avocado into my daughter's diet. She does love blueberries and strawberries so I'll try those versions next. But I could make her a sweeter smoothie by adding frozen pineapple or frozen mango since she isn't on low-carb.

Who doesn't love fruit in smoothie form?

I'll be trying other healthy avocado smoothie recipes to sneak this healthy fruit in so that the kids will eat it. I've already tried a green keto smoothie and a strawberry avocado smoothie.

Hi Lisa, I was wondering if you could try a dry sweetener like Monk Fruit instead of the liquid sweetener? -Chris

Absolutely Chris! I sometimes toss in one or two teaspoons of granular instead when making this avocado smoothie. If needed, I have an easy keto sweetener conversion calculator that you can use to substitute.

I made this substituting the water for almond milk (unsweetened), used swerve as the sweetener and added a tsp of chia seeds. It blended up quite thick, almost like a thick yoghurt consistency, so I added a little more milk but it's still quite thick. It tastes really nice and I've been searching for a good smoothie recipe that doesn't taste awful or is full of fruits (which I can't eat at the moment). You could definitely make and freeze this for an icy treat.

I want to make a bone meal based breakfast smoothie for two people. Our goal is to cut carbs a near zero as possible (using the total carbs minus the fiber = net carbs formula). Also, as near totally sugar free as possible. Nearly all of the stevia leaf based sweeteners I've found on the shelf have some form of sugar derivative in them. Also, I haven't found any frozen fruits/berries/cherries that don't contain in excess of 2 grams sugar.
What a dilemma!! Carbs and sugars of any kind will nullify the ketogenic effect if I understand the science correctly.
      What must we do!!

I made this smoothie for breakfast this morning and it was delicious! It has a little bit of a tang, and it is perfectly smooth from the avocado. Aside from the taste it also seems like a really easy way to consume some healthy fats, so I'll probably start making this regularly.

      Thanks!! 😀

Enjoyed this but way too much lemon flavor for me. Will try 1/2 tablespoon next time to keep it from being as sour.

I want to thank you, sincerely, from the bottom of my heart for this recipe. You see, I am a grownup, and yet, I have never liked avocados. I **knew** how wonderfully good they were for me, yet I could not hide the flavor enough to suit me. It was always the darned aftertaste that was off putting.
So, in a new attempt to try them in my diet, I found your recipe. And you will be pleased to know, I am drinking the smoothie as we speak!
I halved it, as I knew it would be rich, and actually used frozen strawberries. The result was no aftertaste-success! I eyeballed the quantities in halving it, so it was a tad more lemony than I initially desired, but still good. I'll be drinking *a 2nd one* later tonight.
I shall also be going through your website for more recipes.
I just wanted to thank you so much for helping me too. 🙂

Ground flax will only add more carbs. To reduce carbs, you'll need to cut the serving size or reduce a carb such as raspberry or avocado.

Can you please clarify what '2 Tbsp + 1 tsp sugar equivalent' means. Does this mean I use 2 tbsp of say Stevia powder and if so what is this equivalent to compared to sugar? I just made the smoothie using 1 tbsp stevia powder (1serve) and it was very sweet. think I might have mucked up ..... 🙂

Most sweeteners give a sugar equivalent value. And, many concentrated stevia powders are 1 teaspoon for each cup sugar equivalent. So, you'd only need like 1/8 teaspoon of stevia powder to equal 2Tbsp+1tsp sugar.
