Have you heard of people putting butter or oil in their coffee? It’s a way of drinking coffee and getting a boost of healthy fats at the same time. The idea is that it helps you consume the fats and nutrients your body needs without having to eat an entire meal, or take any additional supplements.

I personally love starting out my day with a cup of hot coffee (especially a seasonal drink like keto pumpkin spice latte). It's the perfect time to get my caffeine fix so I have the energy levels to get things done.

However, sometimes, I’m just not in the mood for an entire breakfast. That’s why I love this bulletproof keto coffee – no creamer needed!

This recipe is so tasty, and there are so many ways you can customize it too!

Today, I’m going to share the most basic recipe for you. Then, I’ll even give you a few ideas and ways you can make it taste like your favorite coffee-shop drink.

One thing I have to admit about this drink is that it is not sweet - at all. If you prefer your morning coffee with a lot of keto coffee creamer, you might want to adjust this recipe a bit. But it does taste more like coffee than heavy cream.

I’ll share some ideas and ways you can sweeten it later in this post too.

    Ingredients

There are just a few basic ingredients in this easy keto coffee recipe. Here is what goes into my bulletproof coffee recipe:

    • Black Coffee: You can use any flavor you want! I love using coffee beans that were roasted with other flavors, it’s always a different taste and experience.
    • Collagen Powder: Collagen powder is a protein supplement that can help improve your skin and joint health.
    • Additional Fat: You have a choice with this one. You can either use your favorite butter (grass-fed butter and unsalted butter are my top choices). Or, you can use a similar amount of coconut oil, MCT oil (medium chain triglycerides), or ghee. All of these choices provide an excellent source of healthy fats that that boost you need in the coffee.
    • Low-carb and Keto-friendly Milk: I used unsweetened almond milk, but you can also use full-fat coconut milk or coconut cream instead.
    • Flavoring: I like to toss in a bit of cinnamon, but vanilla extract or sugar-free syrups are great additions too.

    Quick tips

    • The key to a creamy keto coffee is using a blender or milk frother. You can try to stir this together with a spoon, but it won’t mix together as well. Trust me, if you use an electric mixer like a milk frother or Magic Bullet, it will combine it and make it taste better.
    • Add a sweetener. If you want to cut the bitterness down a bit, I suggest adding a dash of your favorite sugar substitute or stir in a sugar free flavor syrup.

    Types of Collagen to Use

There are two different types of collagen powder you can buy - vegan and meat sourced.

Vegan collagen modifies yeast and bacteria to recreate this chemical.

The most popular collagen powder is made from pork, cattle, or marine animals. For this recipe, I suggest using unflavored collagen.

If you want to use flavored collagen, you need to read the label and make sure it doesn't have added sugar or carbs.

    Instructions

Making keto coffee is a really simple way to start your day (and keep you feeling full). It’s also a better option than trying to order keto at Starbucks.

The recipe starts with freshly brewed coffee. Some people like to use a French Press, others enjoy the hot water pour-over method. Even instant coffee or a Keurig will work.

Next, add all of the ingredients to your coffee mug. Leave enough room in your mug for the rest of the ingredients. I suggest filling it about ¾ full.

Use an immersion blender or milk frother to mix it together until you have a creamy coffee. If you prefer, you can combine everything in a small blender like the Magic Bullet.

    Serving Suggestions

This bulletproof coffee will fill you up, so you probably won’t want anything too filling to go along with it for breakfast. But a keto cheese danish made with cloud bread would be a really light and delicious snack to munch on with it.

This would also be the perfect addition to a small serving of keto eggs benedict.

    FAQs

This drink is one of my favorite keto coffee recipes! You are going to love it too. Here are some answers to questions people have asked about Bulletproof coffee.

    Is bulletproof coffee keto?

Yes, my recipe is keto. In fact, there are zero net carbs in each cup!

What are the effects of bulletproof coffee?

This is a very filling drink. The healthy fats will wake up your metabolism, and keep you feeling full. It's also a great source of energy when you need it most!

Does bulletproof coffee get you into ketosis?

It doesn't put you into ketosis on its own, but it helps your body get into it when you pair it with a low-carb diet. When you do the keto diet to lose weight, you need to track your macros and make sure you are eating enough fats, protein, and cutting down on carbs.

Why is it called bulletproof coffee?

Back in 2011, Dave Asprey created a similar hot coffee drink as a breakfast alternative. He named it bulletproof coffee from the line of wellness products and supplements he already had. After other people heard about it, they created copycat keto coffee recipes (like mine)!

I don't recommend that shake as it has 7g of sugar in a serving.

I use about a tablespoon of heavy cream, 1 Tblps of butter and a Tblps of coconut oil or MCT oil, is this ok, I always feel a lot of energy after I drink this. Is it OK to put two fat in your Bullet proof coffee?

It's totally fine to add more fat if you need it to meet your daily macros. Now that I'm in my 50s, I can't handle as much fat as I could in my younger years.
