Everyone knows you can't have any sugar when starting a low-carb diet... can you eat candy on the keto diet? Sugar-free candy that is.

    Guess what? You can!

Well, you can when you make your own out of hazelnuts, sugar-free chocolate chips, and keto-friendly hazelnut spread. Even though there aren't very many carbs in each truffle, they are so rich that you won't want to indulge in more than a few at a time.

These little treats are the perfect after-dinner dessert, a treat at parties, or even a homemade gift. Even people who aren't on the keto diet will be asking you for the recipe!

Keep reading and I'll share the recipe, my best tips, and some serving ideas for these hazelnut chocolate balls.

Ingredients Needed For Hazelnut Chocolate Candy

This is a very simple recipe that only uses three ingredients. In fact, it is so easy that you might even have it memorized after making it one time.

    ChocZero Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips

Use your favorite sugar-free chocolate chips - mine is from ChocZero! If you want them to have a richer taste, you could even use dark chocolate chips.

Just make sure that the ones you use are sugar-free.

    Roasted Hazelnuts

You'll need both whole and finely-chopped hazelnuts. To make it easier, I just bought a bunch of whole roasted hazelnuts and used a food processor to make my own chopped hazelnuts.

    ChocZero Keto Hazelnut Spread

This spread tastes just like Nutella, except it is keto-friendly. If you are going to buy one, always look at the ingredients and the carbs. ChocZero makes a sugar-free spread that is perfectly keto-friendly.

Please note: Check out the recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients used to make this low-carb recipe.

    Quick Tips:

    • If you have a cookie dough scoop, it can be used to form the balls and isn't as messy as using your hands. The scoops would just have a flat bottom which they tend to have anyway when placing on the lined baking sheet.
    • Do not forget to chill the chocolate balls at each step. This will help them become more solid so they form into candy balls.

How To Make Keto Hazelnut Chocolate Candy

This is a really simple recipe. It would be quicker, but you really do have to freeze the hazelnut spread and the chocolate balls at each step, or else they are really difficult to work with.

All of the instructions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, here is a quick overview, along with a few extra tips.

    Freeze The Hazelnut Spread

This is very important because it makes the hazelnut spread easier to form into the balls. Freeze the entire container of hazelnut spread for 15-30 minutes. It is best if you freeze it for the entire 30 minutes.

    Chop Up The Roasted Hazelnuts

You also need to chop up the hazelnuts. This is what becomes the crunchy coating in between the hazelnut spread layer and the chocolate layer.

If you don't have a food processor, I suggest getting one. It makes this step so much faster!

    Chill Chocolate Balls

Now you are ready to start making the balls. Take the frozen hazelnut spread out of the freezer and start creating the candy balls.

The hazelnut spread will start to melt as you do this. So, after you make the balls, place them on a silicone mat and put that on a baking sheet and then freeze them for another 15 minutes.

    Add Hazelnuts

After the hazelnut balls are completely chilled. start to insert one hazelnut into each ball. Then, roll the balls into the chopped hazelnuts. Place them back in the freezer for another 15 minutes.

Dip Chocolate Balls Into Melted Chocolate Chips

Melt the chocolate chips. Then, dip the nut-covered hazelnut candy balls into the melted chocolate chips. When they are all completely covered in chocolate, place them back in the freezer so they can harden one last time.

That's it! After they chill a bit they are ready to eat!

What To Serve With Hazelnut Chocolate Candy

I like to serve these at parties where I know there will be lots of sweets that aren't keto-friendly. Then, I know I'll have something safe for me to munch on. They are perfect with a hot cup of keto bulletproof coffee or a cold Nutella milkshake.

Sometimes when I make something sweet like these chocolate candies, I will crave something salty too. In those cases, I'll munch on some keto parmesan crisps or salt and vinegar cucumber chips.

Frequently Asked Questions About Low-Carb Hazelnut Chocolate Candy

These are so simple to make, but if you have any questions at all, please leave them in the comments. Here are some questions that people often ask about making hazelnut chocolate balls.

How do you store leftover homemade hazelnut candy?

These candy chocolate balls have a tendency to melt if the temperatures are even mildly warm. For that reason, I suggest you keep extras in the refrigerator or the freezer.

They will stay fresh in the freezer for up to 3 months and in the refrigerator for about 3 weeks.

Which brand of sugar-free chocolate chips is best?

My all-time favorite and go-to brand for sugar-free chocolate is ChocZero! They have so many different keto-friendly options and everything I have tried from there is absolutely delicious.

I've used their chocolate chips and caramel syrup to make these keto sea salt caramel ice cream bars and they were AMAZING!

What else can I add to this candy?

If you wanted to add something extra on top of them, you could drizzle some sugar-free white chocolate from ChocZero on top or add a little bit of sea salt for that extra taste.

Is this kind of like Ferrero Rocher?

Yes, these candies are basically my own creation and I was inspired by the decadent Ferrero Rocher truffles. They taste pretty similar to them.

    chocolate hazelnut balls bite shot

Just one bite of this keto hazelnut chocolate candy and you will know you just found your new favorite candy! With only 2g net carbs in each ball, these are a guilt-free dessert everyone will enjoy.

    Other Dessert Recipes To Try

If you enjoyed these hazelnut chocolate balls, here are some more delicious low-carb recipes you should make next. They are my favorites!

    • Low-Carb Chocolate Donuts taste just like your favorite ones from the bakery, but with a fraction of the carbs.
    • Keto White Chocolate Fat Bombs have no net carbs and will fill you up when you are feeling snacky between meals.

The extra step of dipping the chocolate balls in melted chocolate makes these so special. I love these for holiday time on a cookie tray or in the summer (right now!) in the heat, to have a cold, sweet treat. LOVE the hazelnuts in these. Thanks for the good recipe!

These are so cute and chocolate plus hazelnuts is one of my favorite combos. I wonder if it'd be good with macadamias?
