Shredded chicken has to be one of the most versatile things you can make. I know that when I feel overwhelmed or tired, I need something that is super simple to make or heat up – and that’s where this easy recipe comes in.

After you master this pulled chicken recipe, you can use it in a bunch of different ways.

    You can:

    • Make some chicken tacos.
    • Use it in a keto chicken salad mixed with avocado mayo.
    • Add it to a soup like this Mexican chicken soup recipe.

There are so many ideas and they all come from one recipe.

This shredded chicken in a crockpot is one of my favorite recipes for beginners! So, if you know someone that is trying to learn how to cook, share this recipe with them. It’s a fantastic place to start.

    Ingredients

I use an extremely easy cooking method for shreddable chicken that you can build on and change. It tastes incredible and gives you room to customize.

    Chicken

Boneless skinless chicken breast works the best for shredded chicken. Boneless chicken thighs have more fat on them so you can use those if need something more filling. Frozen chicken breast will also work.

You don’t have to chop up the meat either. Just place the pieces in the slow cooker completely whole. If frozen, you may just need to cook them a little longer.

    Broth

I like to make my own chicken broth and use it in recipes like this one. However, if you plan to buy yours, it’s okay to use either chicken stock or chicken broth.

My favorite type of all time is bone broth – I like how much flavor it has plus all the additional health benefits it brings to the recipe.

    Spices

I use garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. There are a ton of other spices you can use. I recommend experimenting with them to find your favorite combination!

Please note: Check out the recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients used to make this low-carb recipe.

    Quick tips

    • The chicken should easily shred using the fork method. Or, you could also place it in a mixing bowl and use the beaters of an electric hand mixer to shred it. The paddle attachment of a stand mixer will also work.
    • To make the chicken spicier, add some red pepper flakes.
    • Double the broth and add some vegetables for a keto chicken soup!

    Instructions

All of the exact step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, I have some extra tips and photos for you.

Add Everything To Your Slow Cooker

You don’t have to rub the spices on the chicken or add ingredients in a specific order – just put it all in the crockpot. As it cooks, everything will infuse together, giving the chicken the most amazing flavor.

    Cook The Chicken

It doesn’t take long for the chicken to cook; either cook it on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 4-6 hours.

    That’s it!

After that, shred your cooked chicken and use it in your weekly meal prep or other dinner recipes that you have.

    ️ Serving suggestions

There are probably hundreds of keto-friendly chicken recipes you can make with this easy shredded chicken recipe.

Make Thai chicken salad with it and enjoy easy lunches all week or if you’d rather have a soup, make some keto white chicken chili. Also, it’s perfect to use in chicken green bean casserole!

For meal prep, use this chicken on top of your favorite leafy greens and add some low-carb salad dressing. You can also meal prep some cauliflower rice and roast some asparagus spears to make a few lunch bowls for work.

Basically, any recipe that calls for chicken is fair game!

    FAQs

Before we get to the recipe card (it’s just a little bit further below), here are some questions people often ask about this recipe.

How do you store leftover crockpot shredded chicken?

The best way to store leftover cooked chicken is in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will last for 3-4 days. But you can freeze it for up to 6 months for future use!

If you are going to use this for your meal prep, separate it into smaller meal prep containers. This way, it’s easier to grab and go.

Can you make shredded chicken in the Instant Pot?

Yes, you can make shredded chicken in the Instant Pot pressure cooker, too.

    To do this:

    1. You need to use 1 cup of broth for every 2 pounds of chicken.
    2. Then, cook on high pressure for 10 minutes with a 5-minute natural release, followed by a quick release.

The Instant Pot method is a lot faster if you are in a time crunch.

Can you make shredded pork in the slow cooker?

Yes, you can make shredded pork in the slow cooker! Just follow my recipe and use pork loin instead of chicken breasts. It will turn out just as delicious and tender.

How do you know when the chicken is done cooking?

The meat is done cooking when it falls apart with your fork. After it cooks all day long, you'll have tender chicken that is completely cooked through.

crockpot shredded chicken on white platter

That’s it! This recipe is so basic and simple, therefore you have lots of room to completely change it. For instance, make it spicy or add your favorite Greek or Asian spices – the options are endless.

When you make shredded chicken in a crockpot, it can be used in a bunch of different recipes throughout the week. In other words, this is one of those “cook once, eat twice” kind of recipes.

This is very handy for meal prep. I am wondering if I can make it in Instant Pot using the slow cooking function. Would slow cooked taste better than pressure cooked?

If you want to speed things up, you can pressure cook the chicken (it would be similar to poaching but with the benefits of pressure and steam).
