It took me a while to realize that I haven't been eating enough fat. Now that I know, I've moved to eating meat that contains a lot more fat and lean protein.

I used to eat leaner cuts of meat like skinless chicken breast, but now I prefer eating chicken with the skin. These buttery chili lime chicken wings are very high in fat, and eating three of them makes it a full meal for me!

When I think of chicken wings, my mind automatically envisions spicy hot red ones because that is how I've always eaten them. But, there are so many more ways to enjoy them.

My husband and son prefer milder versions, so I needed to find other delicious seasonings that the boys in the family will eat. My older daughter and I are all for the spicier ones, but we also like the mild flavors.

That's why we love these chili lime chicken wings so much!

Ingredients Needed For Chili Lime Wings

For these chicken wings, I used all fresh ingredients - that's what made the flavor so robust.

    Chicken Wingettes

Use either fresh or frozen chicken wings. If you are going to use frozen, just let the chicken thaw first.

    Butter

I always use unsalted butter because I like to control how much salt I use in my recipes. If you use salted butter, use a little less salt in the recipe.

    Cilantro

If you don't like the taste of cilantro, you can leave it out. Or, replace it with fresh parsley!

    Lime

I suggest you use a small or medium lime. If the lime is too big, it will give you too much juice and overpower the other spices.

    Spices

Adjust the amounts of the spices to fit your taste. I used:

    • Chili powder
    • Kosher salt
    • Cumin
    • Garlic powder

Tip: You can use garlic salt instead of powder. If you do, use less salt.

    Sweetener

For this recipe, I used a few drops of liquid Stevia. It was the perfect amount of sweetness to balance out the spice. I suggest using a liquid sweetener because it will leave your wings with a slightly caramelized texture.

Please note: Check out the recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients used to make this low-carb recipe.

    Quick Tips:

    • Let your oven preheat while you prepare the chicken wings. This way, it will be ready when you are!
    • Rinse and dry the chicken wings first. This way, the spices will stick better.
    • Use this sauce on other types of meat. It tastes excellent on roasted pork loin or pork chops too.

How To Make Chili Lime Chicken Wings

All of the exact steps are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, here are some additional tips and step-by-step pictures.

    Do The Prep Work

Before you do anything else, preheat your oven and rinse and dry the chicken wings. You should also spread olive oil onto your baking dish or skillet. The wings tend to stick as they bake.

    patting wings dry

    Bake The Wings

Bake the chicken wings in the oven for about half an hour. Flip them over halfway through baking so that they bake evenly.

    Make The Sauce

While the wings are baking, make the sauce. You can use a saucepan for this step because you won't be mixing the chicken in the pan - you'll do it separately.

steps to make the buttery chili lime seasoning

Toss The Wings In The Sauce

Finally, after the chicken wings are fully cooked and the sauce is prepared, place the wings in a large mixing bowl. Then, pour the sauce onto the wings. Yum!

What To Serve With Chicken Wings

I tend to think of chicken wings as party food! Even if I am going to eat them for lunch, I like to make some appetizers to go along with them.

To match the TexMex vibe, enjoy them with some spicy keto deviled eggs or keto taco dip. I also love them with air fryer jalapeno poppers!

Frequently Asked Questions About Chili Lime Wings

Before we get to the recipe card at the bottom of this post, here are some questions people often ask about them.

How much lime juice should I use?

The first time I made this recipe, I used the juice from a really large lime, and it turned out to be way too much. I was able to squeeze out like ¼ cup of juice.

In the second batch, I used a medium-sized lime that only gave about 2 tablespoons of juice, which was much better for the recipe.

Since limes differ in size and juiciness, I limit it to about 2 tablespoons instead of using all the juice from one lime.

How do you store leftover chicken wings?

Store leftover chicken wings in the refrigerator in an airtight container. They will stay fresh for up to 5 days.

How do you make the wings taste spicier?

If you want the wings to have a bit more kick, then use more chili powder and a dash of hot sauce. That will really make them pop!

Can you make them in the air fryer?

Yes, they are so easy to make in the air fryer. Follow the same temperature and length of time as the oven. Flip the wings halfway through cooking.

Both times I've made this buttery chili lime chicken wing recipe, there were no leftovers. That means this dish is certainly a winner with my family!

I have enjoyed many of your recipes, but I am obsessed with this one! It is so nice to have a really flavorful alternative to Buffalo wings that still have some POP. Delicious. Thank you!

Hi, when is the cumin added? When the other dry ingredients are added to the butter?

Yes. It's added with the other spices. I've updated the recipe to reflect that. Thanks!

Love this recipe. I use the dry ingredients plus baking soda as a rub (the baking soda makes the wings crispier) and use the rest of the ingredients to make a compound butter in the food chopper rather than in a pan and toss the cooked wings in the butter. Fantastic! This website has been really helpful to us on our keto journey.

Hi, I use this same recipe except I leave out the cilantro. Don't like it! I bake them like you do but when I roll them i. n the sauce I put them in the broiler and seal in the sauce! Just watch close because it doesn't take long! Love this recipe! I even put it on chicken legs and thighs! (Cheaper)

I'm not a big fan of cilantro either. I do like the idea of rolling in the sauce and using the broiler!
