Some of my favorite dinner recipes (like this cauliflower mac and cheese) ask you to either buy or make some sort of crunch topping like breadcrumbs or, for those on a low carb diet, pork rinds and all of that can takes extra time.

Well, this recipe will make cooking low-carb foods so much faster!

Instead of creating a new batch of keto breadcrumbs each time, you can keep this in your pantry and use what you need when you need it.

Plus, it is already spiced with some zesty herbs! When you are ready to cook, you don't even have to add extra spices.

In this recipe, I'll be sharing everything you ever wondered about keto breadcrumbs. I'll even share some answers to common questions and give you some different ideas and ways you can use them.

Ingredients Needed To Make Keto Breadcrumbs

You don't need any fancy kitchen gadgets to make these bread crumbs. In fact, all you need is some pork rinds and the ability to crush them up really fine!

This recipe also includes my favorite combination of all-purpose spices.

These are the spices that I think enhance just about any meat or recipe that asks for bread crumbs:

    • Garlic powder
    • Onion powder
    • Oregano
    • Basil
    • Salt
    • Pepper

It's a pretty basic recipe when you get down to it!

Please note: Check out the recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients used to make this low-carb recipe.

    Quick Tips:

    • Smash the breadcrumbs really well before you store them in the jar. You can either use a food processor (which makes the entire thing take just a few minutes) or smash them by hand.
    • Are your breadcrumbs uneven? To give them a more uniform size, I prefer to put the pork rinds in a sealable plastic bag and then roll a rolling pin on top of them until they are all made into crumbs.

    How To Make Low-Carb Breadcrumbs

All of the ingredients and complete instructions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, here are some photos of the process along with some extra tips that I'll share too.

    Crush Pork Rinds

The very first step is to really crush up the pork rinds. Make sure there aren't any large pieces sticking out obviously.

    Add Seasoning

Then, add your spices! You are free to add more or less of the spices than I used. If you want your breadcrumbs to have a bit of heat, add some red pepper flakes.

    Store and Use!

After you are happy with the spices that you added, mix them up really well. Then, store them in a sealed container at room temperature.

That's it! I told you it was easy!

    How To Use Keto Breadcrumbs

There are so many different ways you can use these breadcrumbs. I have lots of air fryer recipes that you can browse like my air fryer pork chops. Honestly, if you find a recipe that calls for breadcrumbs, you can use these as a 1:1 substitute. They work just the same.

My favorite way to use these pork rind breadcrumbs is to coat things that I use in the air fryer. From fried chicken to onion rings, these breadcrumbs can be used in a ton of different ways!

How To Properly Store Seasoned Keto Breadcrumbs

After you make them and mix in all the spices, store them in an airtight container and keep them at room temperature.

I used a glass mason jar with a lid because it keeps all the air out really well and is see-through so I can find it really easily in the pantry.

The pork rind breadcrumbs will last about 3 months in your pantry.

Frequently Asked Questions About Low-Carb Breadcrumb Substitutes

The entire recipe is just a little further in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, I wanted to answer a few questions people have about breadcrumbs on the keto diet.

    Are Panko Breadcrumbs Keto-Friendly?

The traditional panko breadcrumbs from Kikkoman are not keto-friendly. There are 24g net carbs in a ½ cup serving.

If you want a Panko-style breadcrumb, make this version with pork rinds instead.

Can I Eat Breadcrumbs On The Keto Diet?

You should avoid traditional breadcrumbs - the ones made from actual wheat bread - while you are on the keto diet. They are full of carbs and will use up your macros!

If you want breadcrumbs, use our recipe for keto-friendly breadcrumbs instead. They will keep you within your limits and still give you the texture you are wanting.

    Are Pork Rinds Healthy?

Pork rinds are basically made from fried pigskin. They are really high in sodium and have lots of saturated fats.

I do not suggest munching on an entire bag of pork rinds. It is safe and a keto-friendly alternative to use them in place of breadcrumbs.

What Are Some Other Breadcrumb Substitute Ideas On Keto?

This has to be my favorite one because it stays fresh the longest and has the best crunch when you use it to bread meats and other recipes.

There are a few other ideas you can try too...

    • Crush up some almonds really fine and use them as a crunchy coating.
    • Lots of people also coat things with almond flour instead of breadcrumbs.
    • You can also use psyllium husk as a breadcrumbs alternative.

You are going to find so many wonderful ways to use this recipe! I have some more ideas below, but what will you think up?

When you have access to a low-carb breadcrumb recipe that you can eat on keto, the sky is the limit!

Other Keto Breadcrumb Recipes To Try

If you enjoyed this recipe, I have lots of recipes and ideas for ways you can use it. Make one of your low-carb dinner recipes with a nice crunch! Here are some of my go-to's:

    • Keto Meatloaf uses these pork rinds to hold everything together and give it that classic meatloaf texture.
    • Meatballs made with nearly carb-free breadcrumbs are bursting with flavor and go with any sauce you add to them.
    • Keto Crab Cakes are a crowd-pleaser, especially at parties and cookouts.
    • Air Fryer Fried Pickles have a delightful crunch from these pork rinds bread crumbs.
    • Keto Mozzarella Sticks are another party food or game-day appetizer that everyone will love.

Have you experimented with oven-baked cheese crips that can be purchased at the store? I’ve tried Whisps or Parm Crisps brands. They seem to have the same consistency as crushed pork rinds. I just don’t eat pork so I’m searching for an alternative 🙂

That is an awesome idea! Trader Joes has some good crisps as well to give a go with (very similar)

It's nearly impossible to find zero carb bread unless you subtract fiber carbs which may actually have an impact.

I use pork rinds for breading a lot, but like to add grated parmesan and sometmes a couple tablespoons of instant potato flakes. Adds a few carbs to the whole recipe (4-5, depending on how much you use. Potato flakes are usually about 14 g.. per 1/3 cup) , but makes a nice flaky coating.
