Everything but the bagel is a seasoning blend of seeds and spices that tastes delicious on top of almost anything. It was made popular in New York in the 1980s when Everything Bagels were commonly sold.

The seasoned bread was such a hit, it wasn't long before people could buy their own jars of the salty and nutty concoction that gave the bagels their trademark flavor!

Trader Joe's everything but the bagel is the most well-known brand. But, you don't have to go out and buy it!

It's actually really easy to make a jar of it right in your kitchen,

     Why You'll Love It

The best thing about this homemade everything bagel seasoning is that it is so versatile. It flavors just about anything you can imagine.

Remember the avocado toast craze? Sprinkle some of this seasoning on a few slices of avocado and you have a filling high-fat snack. It's also the perfect thing to use to season chicken, pork, steak, or even tuna lettuce wraps.

In fact, you'll love this seasoning so much, that you will probably invent new ways to use it!

    Ingredients

You might already have the spices to make everything bagel seasoning in your spice rack. That's the wonderful thing about this recipe - it uses really common and easy-to-find ingredients.

    Spices

Here is a bit more information about the spices I used in this recipe. All the exact amounts are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

First, I used toasted sesame seeds. They are a staple in every kind of jarred "everything" seasoning that you can buy. I used both white sesame seeds and black sesame seeds - but if you don't have both you can use just one of them.

Next, use both dried minced garlic and onion. If you want to use garlic salt, you certainly can. Just omit the sea salt flakes.

Finally, don't forget the poppy seeds! They are what gives this seasoning the nutty taste. It's unmistakable and really necessary.

    Tips

    • If you store this in a mason jar or spice jar, leave at least ¼ of the space near the top empty. This way, you can give it a nice shake to mix all the ingredients up.
    • I like to make a large batch of it and store it in my spice rack. It will last about 6 months in an air tight container. After that time, the quality and pungency of the spices will decrease.
    • You could also just mix a little bit of each ingredient together and make only as much as you need for one recipe at a time.

    Instructions

There is just one step - mixing everything together in a small bowl. The real genius of this recipe is how delicious all these spices taste together.

There isn't a right or a wrong way to blend all the spices. You can simply mix them in a bowl and then use a funnel to pour them into a jar.

However, I like to skip a step and just add all of the spices to the jar, seal it, and give it a nice shake!

If you aren't storing the spices and instead just want to use the mixture in one recipe, then mix it in a bowl.

    ️ Serving Suggestions

There are probably hundreds of ways you can use this versatile seasoning. It's both mild and incredibly flavorful at the same time. This is one of those spice blends that work on just about anything.

Lots of people love to season Instant Pot salmon with this mixture. It enhances all the flavors of the fish in the most perfect way. You can also add it to keto salmon patties for a fresh new taste.

Use everything bagel seasoning sprinkled on top of any type of keto salad that you want for added flavor and texture. I like to add it to my keto cobb salad or even with spinach strawberry salad!

Try it on roasted veggies like roasted asparagus, roasted radishes, and roasted artichoke hearts.

Or, whip up some easy low-carb bread and use it to make avocado toast with this sprinkled on top. You can mix it into soft cheese which fresh herbs for a spread and creamy dips too.

Out of all of these ideas, my favorite way to use this mixture is to sprinkle it on top of bacon egg muffins before I bake them. It really takes these portable egg bites to a whole new level. You can also sprinkle on scrambled eggs.

    FAQS

Before I get to the printable recipe card, here are some questions people often ask about this easy seasoning mix. If you don't see your question in this list, leave it in the comments.

Can I eat a bagel on keto?

Yes, you can eat a bagel on keto - as long as it is made with keto-friendly ingredients. If you are buying a bagel, read the ingredients first. Most bagels made with flour are not low-carb.

Is everything bagel seasoning good for you?

Yes, this seasoning is made from healthy ingredients that are good for you. Sesame and poppy seeds are high in healthy fats and protein. There is also calcium and vitamin C in this spice mix too.

How long does this seasoning last?

If you seal it in an airtight container, this seasoning should last about 6 months. It might last even longer than that, but after about 6 months the flavor won't be as pronounced and the taste will begin to deteriorate.

Does everything bagel seasoning have chia seeds?

No, my homemade everything bagel seasoning does not include chia seeds. I have seen other recipes put chia seeds in their mixture. Feel free to add a little bit to your spice mixture if you want to boost the nutritional content.

How many carbs are in everything bagel seasoning?

This recipe and many other blends have 0g net carbs per serving for the seasoning mix.

    Homemade bagels

I prefer to make my own keto bagels because I can control what is in them. In fact, I have three low-carb bagel recipes that I love:

    • Keto Bagels With Fathead Dough have 4g net carbs each and are super easy to make.
    • Garlic Coconut Flour Keto Bagels are made without cheese. They also have a more savory flavor.
    • Keto French Toast Bagels are perfect when you want something sweeter. They only have 3g net carbs each.

Love the idea of making this with your fathead bagels! It's so nice to be able to make this in bulk now instead of buying little jars. I like to buy organic seeds, too, so this way I can source the seeds myself, whereas a lot of seasoning mixes are conventional.
