Have you ever wondered, "What makes chili taste like chili?" It may be different for each person. Taking each ingredient apart and creating your own version of a recipe is often the most fun part of cooking.

Chili is one of those recipes that I could eat any time of year. Most people enjoy it when clouds cover the sky, and it's cold, windy, or rainy.

It's also a very popular base for lots of other recipes. People love to use chili on top of cauliflower mac and cheese or make it a part of their favorite plate of nachos.

I am much more simple - I just enjoy a hot cup of chili with some keto cornbread. It's satisfying in the best way!

As you make this recipe for chili seasoning, consider making a double batch and storing it in small spice jars. It's a lovely homemade gift! In fact, it has such an amazing flavor, you might have people asking for your recipe.

    Ingredients

There are just a few individual spices in this homemade chili seasoning mix. Buy them in bulk, and you'll always have what you need to make the best batch of chili you have ever tasted.

    Chili Powder

You will definitely need chili powder for seasoning homemade chili. This is made from ground dried chili peppers. It is possible to make your own, but it is so much faster and easier to buy a jar of it.

    Ground Cumin

Cumin has a hearty and warm taste, which is why so many people love adding it to their best chili seasoning.

    Salt

I always add salt to my homemade spice mixes. If you use garlic salt instead of garlic powder, don't add extra salt.

Whether you grind your own sea salt or use iodized table salt is completely up to you. It won't change the flavor of the mixture at all.

    Pepper

Use your favorite type of pepper, even if that is ground black pepper. White pepper has the same taste, but it just mixes in better, and you can't see it.

    Allspice

Allspice is a ground-up berry from Jamaica. It tastes a lot like a combination of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

If you don't have allspice, you can use a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg instead.

    Onion Powder

I love how onion powder rounds out the flavor of the homemade spice mix. Onion flakes or dried minced onions are the perfect substitutes if you don't have the powder.

    Garlic Powder

In almost every single chili seasoning mix, you will find garlic powder. You can use garlic salt instead. If you do, I suggest omitting additional salt from the recipe.

    Cayenne Pepper

In order to keep the chili seasoning mild, you only need a pinch of cayenne pepper in the entire batch. Add more if you want it to have more heat. You can also use a pinch of red pepper flakes or chipotle powder instead.

Please note: Check out the recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients used to make this low-carb recipe.

    Quick Tips

    • Make the seasoning in a jar. Just add everything into a jar with a lid and shake to combine.
    • To ensure the ingredients are well combined, at least ¼ of the jar should be empty.
    • Check the "best by" dates on each ingredient - the seasoning will be good up until the earliest best by date.
    • Use the freshest spices you can find for the best results.

    Instructions

This homemade chili seasoning mix is literally as simple as grabbing the spices and mixing them together. Here are a few additional tips that will help your chili seasoning taste the best.

    Mix Everything In A Bowl

Add all of the chili spices to a small mixing bowl. The bowl should have enough room for you to mix things up without them spilling out the top.

Store Chili Seasoning In A Mason Jar

After you mix it together completely, store it in an air-tight container like a mason jar.

Note: You can make this DIY chili seasoning right in a jar! Just be sure only to fill it ¾ full, leaving ¼ of the jar empty so it is easier to mix.

How To Use Chili Seasoning Mix

There are so many different ways to use this chili seasoning. I like to use it to make your everyday basic chili. You can also use it to make some chili lime chicken wings.

Do you like nachos? Use this mix to make zucchini nachos.

This seasoning mix also tastes delicious in venison chili - either on the stovetop or the slow cooker.

    FAQs

Before we get to the printable recipe card, here are some questions people often ask about making homemade chili seasoning. If you don't see your question in this list, please leave it in the comments.

How do you store homemade chili seasoning?

The best way to store it is in a mason jar that seals tightly with a lid.

    Is paprika in chili powder?

I did not use paprika in my spice mix. It adds a smoky flavor to any dish. If you like that taste, then add a pinch.

Is chili seasoning the same as taco seasoning?

This homemade chili seasoning recipe is not the same as taco seasoning, although people do use them interchangeably. I haven't tried it, but I imagine ground beef seasoned with this mix would taste quite yummy in a taco!

    Why you'll love it

It's so easy to create your very own batch of smoky and spicy chili seasoning.

Store it in smaller jars and give it away as homemade food gifts - it's the perfect housewarming or wedding present.

The more you make it, the more ways you will find to change it, so it's exactly how you like for your favorite chili recipes.
