Have a few extra tomatoes from your garden or some cans in your pantry? Then you probably have everything you need to make this recipe!

I’ve had a hard time finding a good sugar-free pizza sauce at the store that's suitable for a keto diet. That’s what inspired me to develop this recipe.

There are a few good brands you can buy now. But this keto pizza sauce is so easy, you may just start making your own from now on. It’s so easy to make from scratch!

You can use fresh or canned tomatoes for this recipe. You can strain the seeds, but I just leave them in. It’s much easier and I don’t notice them.

Then, simply combine the ingredients, cook in the microwave, and puree in a blender or food processor. That’s it!

This sauce is perfect for pizza night or to use as a keto pasta sauce. Trust me, once you make it, you’ll find tons of uses for it!

Sugar free pizza sauce in glass

    Instructions

This keto pizza sauce recipe comes together in just a few very easy steps. It requires almost no work at all!

    Prep Tomatoes

You can skip this if using canned tomatoes.

    1. To easily skin the tomatoes, start by gently cutting an “X” at the base of each one.
    2. Place the tomatoes in boiling water for 30-60 seconds.
    3. Gently remove the skin.
    4. Cut the tomatoes into quarters and place in a microwave safe bowl.
    initial preparation steps

    Cook and blend

    1. Add the optional sweetener and seasonings to the tomatoes.
    2. Cook uncovered in the microwave on MED HIGH to HIGH for about 20-30 minutes, removing excess liquid in the middle of cooking.
    3. Transfer the tomato mixture into a blender or food processor.
    4. Puree until smooth.
    final preparation steps

Your low carb pizza sauce is ready! It can be used immediately or canned for later use. If you want to spic it up, sprinkle in some red pepper flakes.

    What pizza sauce is keto

You can find a lot of keto friendly pasta sauces at the store these days. However, pizza sauces may be harder to find.

Rao’s pizza sauce has just 3 net carbs per ¼ cup with no added sugar. It’s pretty common to find at the store, too!

You could use a keto marinara, but it will be thinner than this low carb pizza sauce. I personally don’t like substituting pasta sauces on my pizza.

That’s why I usually make my own keto pizza sauce. I know exactly what ingredients are going into it, and I can make extra for future use!

    Carbs in tomatoes

Tomatoes are a low sugar fruit, so you can enjoy them in moderation on keto.

A medium tomato is going to have about 4.8 total carbs and 1.5 grams of fiber. So your average tomato will have about 3.3 net carbs.

This recipe calls for 4 pounds of tomatoes and makes 16 servings. At that size, each serving will only have about 3 net carbs.

Now that you have your sugar free pizza sauce, what should you make with it?

I have quite a few crust recipes on my site. Once you have the crust and the low carb pizza sauce, you can add toppings to your heart’s desire!

You can check out my almond flour pizza crust, coconut flour pizza crust, almond flour pizza crust with no eggs, or cauliflower pizza crust (keto). There’s a great option for any taste or dietary preference.

    Ingredients

    • 4 pounds tomatoes
    • 2 ½ teaspoons Truvia or 2 Tablespoons (3 packets) low carb sweetener
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 teaspoon basil
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    US Customary - Metric

    Instructions

    • Skin tomatoes by first gently cutting an “X” at the base and then placing in boiling water for 30-60 seconds.
    • After skin has been removed, cut in quarters and place in microwave safe bowl.
    • Add sweetener and seasonings.
    • Cook uncovered in microwave on MED HIGH to HIGH (depending on wattage) for about 15-20 minutes.
    • Pour out excess liquid and cook for another 5-10 minutes.
    • Place tomato mixture into blender or food processor and puree.
    • The keto pizza sauce can be used immediately or canned for later use.

To save time, peeled canned tomatoes can be used instead of fresh. Tomatoes can also be cooked on the stove rather than the microwave until softened, about 15 to 20 minutes.

I freeze this keto pizza sauce. But if I were canning, I'd use smaller size jars that you can use up for just a few pizzas as the sauce won't last too long in the fridge after opening.

Quick question - I have jarred puréed tomatoes already, so how much should I substitute for the whole tomatoes? I want to try this recipe soon because Rao (which we love!) has been in short supply around here. Thank you!

One source says 1 pound of tomatoes is equivalent to 3 cups puréed. You may want to test it with half the recipe.

I have to say, as an American-Italian, 2nd generation, we never put oregano in pasta sauce. Oregano is only used in Pizza sauce. And we never add sugar although some use a carrot to sweeten the sauce but that depends on the tomatoes used. Each summer, some tomatoes can be sweeter than others. You don't know until you cook the sauce. And garlic is used, parsley and fresh basil. But all that is according to personal taste and time. I just thought youd like to know. I hope Im not offending anyone.

I'd say maybe an hour at most and then cook for another 10-15 minutes. It may take some experimenting.

Is it really difficult for me to comprehend that 1 cup of your sauce is 5+ servings. (16 servings=3 cups) Was this a typo? I would use a lot more than that 5 of us would use the whole 3 cups. Am I 'out to lunch"! Help!

Each serving is only a couple tablespoons as it's only a thin layer spread on the pizza.

When I make fat head pizza, I get three pizzas, I use two tablespoons od pizza sauce on each. I think you don't really need to have as much sauce as you think.

I'll never buy sauce in a jar or can again. I started with canned tomatoes, but still, I never realized that making sauce was as simple as throwing some tomatoes in the ol food processor and cooking it up with some seasoning. I, and my low carb diet, thank you. Thanks to my low carb sauce, Chicken Parmesan has become a nice addition to my limited menu.

I am excited about your pizza sauce recipe. Pizza is a favorite of mine but I have diabetes so do not make as often as I did in the past. Have you used cauliflower to make the crust with. If I use your sauce with the cauliflower crust, I will not feel guilty having pizza more often. Thanks for the good recipes you share with us.
